Bikes - Upright or Recumbent Cycles

Upright bikes give you a more traditional bicycle experience - sitting up on a seat, hands on the handlebars, legs vertical to the floor. In this position, the quadriceps are the focus. Recumbent exercise bikes put the user in a reclined position - the back is supported by the seat back and the legs pedal horizontally out in front. They work the hamstrings and gluteal muscles and are easier on the lower back. Both offer a good cardio-burning experience, so it is really a matter of comfort and preference.

Uprights

The exercise bike needs no introduction, being the one piece of exercise equipment that you are guaranteed to see everywhere - no self respecting Gym would be complete without one! Exercise bikes have come along way from the 'early days' and come in all shapes and sizes. However basic or elaborate an exercise bike, it will enable you to get a cardiovascular charge while minimizing stress on the knees, joints and back. People of a wide range of fitness levels and conditions can bike safely and effectively, from seniors and pregnant women to triathletes. As with all fitness equipment, exercise bikes come in a full spectrum of prices. If you are thinking of buying a bike have a think about what you need from the bike, and what you want to get out of your workout. Also take time to ask questions about practical things like frame construction, maximum load weight and portability.

Quiet Ride:
A smooth, peaceful exercise bike that doesn't "roar like a rocket" is the key if you want to watch a movie, the TV or read whilst you exercise.

Safety:
An encased wheel is a must if children's fingers may be nearby.

Stability:
Look for an exercise bike that has its weight evenly spread between the front and back.

Access to Controls:
You want to be able to adjust mid pedal and gauge your progress on the monitor at a glance which will indicate distance, speed, calories burned, resistance level and your pulse rate.

Recumbent Cycles

The comfort factor:
The biggest reason most of us quit exercising is discomfort of one form or another. You may already be familiar with the 'saddle soreness' of traditional upright cycles and the fatigue caused by the repetitive strain on muscles when using machines such as rowers and easy-riders. The plush seats and comfortable body position of recumbent cycle will have you sailing through your workout and wondering where the time went!

Our recumbent cycles feature:

  • Excellent back support
  • Balanced workout - front and back of thighs
  • Seat adjustable to suit most users
  • Electronics package - speed, time, distance, calories, pulse.
